Corbett National Park, named after the famous
hunter and naturalist Jim Corbett is the oldest
Wildlife Sanctuary in India and spread over 1200 sq.
kms. Formerly known as the Hailey National Park and then
Ramganga National Park, The Corbett National Park is
situated in the foothills of Kumaon in the Uttarakhand
State. The reserve stands at an average altitude ranging
between 1000 ft. to 3100 ft. above the sea level.
Located in the sub-Himalayan belt, the park is also a
famous ecotourism destination.
Corbett National Park is known for the Royal Bengal
Tiger and obviously as a launch pad for the
prestigious Project Tiger in India. The dense
sub-Himalayan jungle, the River Ramganga flowing through
the park and an abundance of prey make it an ideal home
for the Indian Tiger.
It’s true that Corbett has not only captured the
imaginations but also dreams of many wildlife
enthusiasts who come here to witness different habitats.
Apart from the Royal Bengal Tiger, the Asiatic Elephant
is arguably the next most famous wild resident of
Corbett National Park. Some of the other animals spotted
in the reserve - Leopard, Cheetal, Sambhar, Wild Boar
and Langoor. Also due to 600 species of Avifauna,
Corbett is probably one of the richest Bird
Sanctuaries in India..
Any wonder then that Corbett has been described as the
land of the Roar, Trumpet and Song!
