Jim Corbett National Park Tiger Reserve

The Jim Corbett National Park, located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, is noted for being the oldest national park in India. Its namesake is the famous hunter of man-eating tigers, and a noted conservationist – Jim Corbett. It was founded in 1936 and was called the Hailey National Park then.

The Jim Corbett National Park is noted for acting as a protected tiger reserve for the critically endangered Bengal tiger of India. In fact, this sanctuary was the first to have been taken under the Protect Tiger initiative.

The park has geographical and ecological characteristics of the sub-Himalayan belt nature. The Jim Corbett National Park is a haven for the adventure seekers and wildlife adventure lovers alike.

The Corbett National Park Tiger Reserve contains 520.8 km2. area of hills, riverine belts, marshy depressions, grass lands and large lakes. The elevation ranges from 1,300 feet to 4,000 feet. Winter nights in Corbett national park are chilly but the days are sunny and warm. It rains from July to September.

The Corbett National Park has been a favored location of tourists and wildlife lovers for decades. Tourism is only allowed in selected areas of the Jim Corbett National Park, so people are afforded the opportunity to experience the splendid vistas and an amazing diversity and variety in wildlife. In recent years, the number of tourists visiting the Corbett National Park have risen dramatically, having been consistently over 70000 every year from India and elsewhere.

A total of 488 different species of plants have been recorded in the tiger reserve. The dense, moist and deciduous forest mainly consists of sal, haldu, pipal, rohini and mango trees, and these trees cover almost 73 per cent of the park.

Over 585 species of resident and migratory birds have been categorized, including the crested serpent eagle, blossom-headed parakeet and the red junglefowl — the ancestor of all domestic fowl. 33 species of reptiles, seven species of amphibians, seven species of fish and 37 species of dragonflies have also been recorded.

Bengal tigers, although plentiful, are not easily spotted due to the abundance of camouflage in the reserve. Thick jungle, the Ramganga river, and plentiful prey make this reserve an ideal habitat for tigers who are opportunistic feeders and prey upon a range of animals.

Leopards are found in hilly areas but may also venture into the low land jungles. There are scores of different species of mammals and birds in the Jim Corbett National Park Tiger Reserve. In the summer, elephants can be seen in herds of several hundred.

Due to the heavy influx of tourists, the Corbett National Park has been expanded into a prominent Eco-tourism location. It is thanks to this traffic that many hotels and resorts like the Tarangi Resort have been set up around the park, so that every visitor can enjoy their trip to the maximum.

Dhoni appointed Brand Ambassador for Tiger Conservation

Indian Cricket Captain MS Dhoni with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Romesh Pokhriyal

Indian Cricket Captain MS Dhoni with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Romesh Pokhriyal

Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has been appointed honorary life warden of the Jim Corbett National Park by the Uttarakhand government. Dhoni will also serve as brand ambassador for Tiger Conservation in the park. The announcement was made by the chief minister of Uttarakhand, Mr. Romesh Pokhriyal Nishank.

Talking on the occasion in Dehradun, Dhoni said that “I look forward to the corridors of Corbett-Rajaji being widened and strengthened”.

Dhoni is one of India’s most celebrated icons, and the youth of the country look upto him as a role model. Hopefully, Dhoni’s association with this project should help the case of tiger conservation.

Already the number of tigers in India have fast dwindled, especially from the high figure a the turn of 1980. Even though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is himself a strong supporter of ‘Project Tiger’ and was instrumental in getting Sariska seeing tigers again, and hopefully things will get better for this endangered species, which also happens to be India’s national animal.
